Hemp and bamboo are marketed with the same vocabulary: sustainable, natural, fast-growing. The crops deserve the language; the fabrics are a different story, because most "bamboo" clothing is viscose, a chemically regenerated fibre, while hemp clothing is the actual plant fibre, spun.
The distinction that decides everything
Hemp fabric is a bast fibre: stalks are retted, decorticated, and the long fibres spun into yarn, mechanically. Bamboo fabric is almost always bamboo viscose (rayon): the plant is dissolved in solvents and extruded into a new fibre. The raw crop's sustainability survives that process differently in each case, which is why "bamboo is green" and "bamboo viscose is green" are different claims, and only the first is simple.

The sustainability ledger
Both crops grow quickly with low pesticide demand. Hemp's processing is mostly mechanical; its environmental footprint concentrates in farming and retting. Bamboo viscose's footprint concentrates in chemical processing, where solvent recovery varies enormously between mills; closed-loop lyocell-style production is much cleaner than commodity viscose, and the label rarely tells you which you are getting. On processing transparency, hemp is the easier fibre to trust.
Which to buy for what
Bamboo viscose earns its place in soft, next-to-skin basics where drape matters and lifespan expectations are modest. Hemp earns its place in shirts, trousers, and outer layers meant to last years, and in blends that add cotton's softness, covered in hemp versus cotton. Durability per dollar, hemp wins; softness per dollar on day one, bamboo viscose wins.
